Maintenance for Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks that work for a living: the 6.7L Cummins, the emissions system, and everything that takes the strain of a heavy trailer.
A heavy-duty truck earns its keep hauling and towing. Its maintenance should be planned around that work.
Quick answer: Terrace Chrysler services Ram 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty trucks, including the 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel: oil and filters, fuel filters and water separator, DEF and exhaust after-treatment, cooling system, brakes, steering and towing equipment. Book online, by text or at 250-635-7187, Monday to Friday.
A large volume of heavy-duty diesel engine oil and a Mopar filter, on the interval the oil change indicator sets.
Diesel fuel carries water and contaminants. The filters and separator keep them out of the high-pressure injection system.
Diesel exhaust fluid, the particulate filter and related sensors checked so the truck stays out of reduced-power mode.
Coolant condition and hoses checked. A diesel towing uphill makes a lot of heat.
Pads, rotors and fluid on a truck that stops far more weight than a half-ton.
Front-end parts, hitch, trailer wiring and trailer brake connection inspected.
Modern diesel injection runs at extremely high pressure and has very little tolerance for water or dirt. If the water-in-fuel light comes on, have it looked at soon. Fuel filters replaced on schedule are cheap insurance for injectors that are not.
DEF is used up as you drive and has to be topped up. Use fresh, sealed DEF and keep the cap clean. Contaminated or old fluid can trigger warnings and a derate.
The DPF traps soot and burns it off during regeneration. Long highway runs and towing help it clean itself. A truck that only does short trips may not get hot enough, and the soot builds up. If the truck tells you a regeneration is needed, give it a steady drive.
The exhaust brake uses the engine to slow the truck on long grades and saves the service brakes. Use it, and let us know if it stops working the way it should.
Towing is the reason most people buy a Ram 2500 or 3500, and it is also what the severe service schedule is written for. Heavy trailers shorten the intervals for oil, fluids and brakes, and put extra load on the steering and suspension.
Diesel thickens in extreme cold. Winter-blend fuel from local stations handles most of it. On trips into colder country, fill up locally and keep the tank topped up to reduce condensation.
DEF freezes at about minus 11 degrees Celsius. The truck has heaters to thaw it, and it is designed to handle this, but a frozen DEF warning on a very cold morning is not unusual.
A diesel starting in the cold asks a lot of its two batteries. Plugging in the block heater on cold nights makes starting easier on the engine and the batteries. We test both batteries at every visit.
Long idling in the cold is hard on a modern diesel and its emissions system. Warm up by driving gently after a short idle.
